As a music blogger, I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on album and song reviews, but this time, I'm thrilled to step into something new. I’m diving into my first-ever artists reviews! And what better way to start than with a Juno Award-winning band I discovered only last year?

Enter Dear Rouge, a powerhouse alternative rock duo from Vancouver. Consisting of Drew and Danielle McTaggart, the band has a sound that’s unapologetically bold, electric, and totally infectious.

So why Dear Rouge? What’s the magic behind this duo that’s slowly but surely captured my attention, alongside countless fans across Canada? As I’ve spent more time listening to their dynamic sound, it’s become obvious just how influential and exciting their music truly is. While their hits like “Goon” and “I’m Not Afraid to Dance” make waves, they’re so much more than that—they’re musicians who create an emotional connection with their audiences and leave an imprint with every note. On top of that, as a Newfoundland-based music blog, I was stoked to realize Dear Rouge has performed right here in my province, making their connection all the more personal.

Who Are Dear Rouge?

Dear Rouge is the project of Drew and Danielle McTaggart. With a Juno Award in their corner, they've earned well-deserved recognition for their work since their formation in 2012. Their style is eclectic, blending elements of indie rock, alternative, and a bit of electronic, crafting a sound that stands out on the Canadian music scene.

Both Drew and Danielle bring something unique to the mix. Drew's production skill adds polish to their musical landscape, while Danielle, with her distinctive voice, brings an edge to their melodies that you'll find yourself humming long after the music ends. Together, they’ve created an incredibly exciting body of work that’s as catchy as it is thought-provoking. Whether it's a feel-good anthem or something deeper with introspective lyrics, there’s always something fresh in their music.

Goon and I’m Not Afraid to Dance: The Tunes That Got Me Hooked

Before diving into their albums, I can’t help but mention two of my all-time favorite songs by Dear Rouge: "Goon" and "I’m Not Afraid to Dance." "Goon" is such an irresistible song—it’s one of those tracks that hooks you with its energy right away. The track radiates an infectious feeling with its chorus that you can’t help but sing along to. If this song were a person, it would be the one who always brings the party vibes and has a magnetic energy that draws you in every time. It’s a track that’s as much about self-assurance as it is about having fun. The upbeat vibe complements the rebellious, carefree attitude behind the lyrics. It's a full-on reminder that life is meant to be lived without hesitation.

On the other hand, "I’m Not Afraid to Dance" is the kind of anthem that inspires you to let loose. It takes that same sense of confidence and wraps it in a track that dares you to be authentic, energetic, and uninhibited. Whether you’re in your bedroom, or living room, or blasting it through your headphones while you're out, it has that effect where you just can’t help but move with it

Their latest album, Lonesome High, showcases a wonderful evolution in their sound, marking a new chapter in their musical journey. You get all the vibrant energy of the old hits while exploring deeper nuances. The tracks on this album still radiate that signature Dear Rouge mix of catchy hooks and profound emotional depth but lean into a slightly moodier tone, making it a perfect album to either belt out on repeat or get lost in your own thoughts to.

If you're familiar with their previous works, you’ll notice an intriguing mix of refined production, elevated lyrics, and enhanced sonic exploration that enhances their distinctive appeal. Danielle's vocals, in particular, shine brightly in this album, with just the right balance of sweetness and strength. It's the perfect way to connect the past to the future, whether you’re reminiscing about their older tracks or falling in love with their new ones. (Check out Lonesome High, by the way—it’s an album you won’t regret listening to!)

“Lonesome High” – A New Chapter for Dear Rouge

Now, let’s talk about the reason why I’m writing this review now—Lonesome High. Released in 2024, the album feels like a logical progression from their earlier work, but it’s also filled with even more sophistication. The songs are deeply atmospheric, allowing room for introspective moments while still keeping that powerful energy I love in their music. The album mixes infectious, upbeat tracks with those that feel quieter, more contemplative. You get the sense of contrast, of emotional peaks and valleys.

Unfortunately, this year’s Lonesome High tour won’t make its way to Newfoundland (much to my disappointment! but the Canadian leg kicks off January 31 in Nanaimo, BC, before moving east to Victoria, then Alberta and Saskatchewan for multiple shows throughout the first half of February. The band will wrap up the tour in Ontario, with dates in Kingston, Ottawa, London, and Toronto.

I’m really hoping that future plans will see them returning to the east coast for another appearance. I’m convinced that the energy they would bring to a Newfoundland show would be electric who knows maybe a summer show here this year)

Final Thoughts:

Dear Rouge isn’t just about catchy beats and synth-driven rock—they’re storytellers at heart, creating songs that make us move, think, and feel. Their rise from a small duo to an influential voice in Canadian music is proof of their undeniable talent. I’m incredibly excited for what lies ahead in their musical journey—and I know that more people will catch on to their infectious sounds along the way. The fact that they have managed to stay fresh, relevant, and captivating through the years shows that Dear Rouge is far from being a passing phase. Their music is filled with a timeless, dynamic quality that’s bound to stand the test of time.

For anyone looking for the kind of artist who balances boldness with introspection, and catchy melodies with real substance, Dear Rouge is a band to watch closely. Keep an eye on them and check out their latest, Lonesome High—it's more than worth your time. And here’s hoping that one day soon, their music will grace the stages of Newfoundland once again!
