With violet, the alt/pop sensation from this province is back with a vengeance, following up their highly successful and MusicNL award-nominated EP, ‘Saturday Nights In.’ Their latest offering, ‘Your Sunday Best,’ which was released on October 13th and is available on all streaming services, is honestly a triumphant trio of toe-tapping, finger-snapping songs. And This St. John’s-based band is renowned for their high-energy performances and irresistible hooks, honestly making them a musical force to be reckoned with.
The core lineup of with violet consists of Sarah Newell on vocals and saxophone, Pete on vocals and keyboards, Matthew Cadigan on guitar, Spencer FitzGerald on bass, and Hunter Madden on drums. Together, they all bring a refreshing blend of contemporary sound with a nostalgic nod to the 1970s-era light-funk vibes, and creating an album that’s impossible not to love
Your Sunday Best’ is a concise collection of three standout tracks: “Toxic Tiffany,” “Not News,” and “Mountains Are Calling.” From the moment you hit play on this album it’s evident that WITH VIOLET has poured their hearts and souls into this EP.
And While every song on this album is a gem, “Mountains Are Calling” has taken the top spot as my personal favorite. This track opens with an infectious groove that’s nothing short of unique. As the lyrics kick in, you’ll find more than meets the ear. Beyond its surface narrative about ambition, the lyrics “lace up your shoes… don’t fall behind… the Mountains are Calling” beckon you to reflect on living in the moment and being present, urging you to put down your phone and embrace the world’s wonders. It’s a powerful message wrapped in an irresistible musical package.
And this band has spent the last year-and-a-half sharing their music far and wide, captivating audiences across the province. Notable performances include a headlining set at Writers of Woody Point, and an opening set at the Iceberg Alley Performance Tent, where they shared the stage with the likes of Walk Off The Earth and The Beaches! ( I had hoped to attend the latter, but sometimes life has other plans)
So in conclusion Your Sunday Best’ and ‘Saturday Nights In’ are gems that deserve your attention. And You can find them on the band’s website or wherever you usually acquire your music
As you dive into the infectious grooves and captivating lyrics of ‘Your Sunday Best,’ you’ll find it impossible not to sing and groove along.
